What To Expect
Whether you this is your first massage or you are well versed with massage therapy. This is what you can expect for your first appointment at the clinic.
For each initial visit, we start with discussing your health history form (health interview). This can take anywhere from a 5 -15 minutes. This is also where your goals and concerns are discussed. Further questions related to your health are asked to help understand what may be happening and to ensure that your treatment will be safe and effective. This more detailed interview process is not done with every visit unless there are new injuries or updates to your health.
Next, an assessment will be done when I require more information and to develop a clinical hypothesis (This is usually done by gathering subjective and objective information while we are discussing your goals for the appointment). This can take up to 10 minutes and varies on the complexity of the injury or impairment. Though I do not usually need to do a full orthopaedic assessment, if the injury is complex or I need more objective results, this will be apart of the appointment time (orthopaedic assessments usually take anywhere from 10-20 minutes).
Once I have all the information that I need, we will walk through what will be done in the treatment (informed consent). This part is vital to ensure that the outlined treatment is both understood and agreed upon. I will:
-
Negotiate areas of treatment and the draping to be used
-
Negotiate positioning on table, pillows, oil used, pressure, music, lighting, and hydrotherapy
-
Discuss the benefits, possible side effects, possible risks, cautions and contraindications to treatment
-
Discuss informed consent (changes to treatment and appointment can occur at any time)
-
Answer questions you may have
-
Obtain your verbal consent to the negotiated treatment plan for the appointment
I reserve the last 5 minutes of your appointment to allow you time to get off the table, get dressed, and go through home care instructions (hydrotherapy use at home, stretches, remedial exercises, self massage, etc).

What appointment length should I book?
If this is your first booking at the clinic, it would be best to pick an appointment length based on knowing that there will be roughly 15-25 minutes (can be less or more depending on intake/ treatment planning complexity/go home instructions) of non treatment time.
If this is a follow up appointment, it would best to pick an appointment length that will include roughly 10 minutes of non treatment time.
Why do I have to fill out the health history form/ Is it important that I list all required sections?
It is a requirement from my regulatory body to have you complete a health history form. Registered Massage Therapists are Regulated Health Care Practitioners must adhere to the RHPA. Ensuring that you have taken the time to properly fill out all the required information is most important to ensure your health and safety is maintained. Even though you may not think it isn't related to your massage, it is important for me to have the full picture of your health history. This helps ensure that your treatments are effective and safe.
What payment methods do you accept?
I accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Debit, eTransfer, and cash.
What is the difference between a Massage Therapist/ Therapy and someone who provides massage?
Massage Therapist/ Therapy is a protected title and can only used by someone who as received a Massage Therapy Diploma (2200 hours of education) and than undergone 2 examinations (Objective Structured Clinical Examination and a multiple choice exam, both require a minimum of 70% to pass) with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (Regulatory body for RMT's in Ontario). Once we have passed the required education and passed the examinations, we must apply (list of requirements be done such as a PRCVP) to become registered. Only once the CMTO has granted a registration number can you use the titles(s) RMT, Massage Therapist, Massage Therapy, etc. RMT's in Ontario must adhere to the Regulated Health Care Practitioners Act. Being registered ensures that public safety, accountability for practitioners, and to provide regulation for practitioners. The role of an RMT is to treat a variety of musculoskeletal impairments by providing informed consent, assessing, creating a treatment plan, treating, and providing remedial exercises. We are usually covered with third party insurance companies and can offer direct billing.
Do you do direct billing?
Yes, I work with many insurers and can usually submit claims without any issues. Please see below for more information or to see a list of the insurance companies that I currently work with.
For more information on your massage therapy appointment, I would encourage you to read through this great resource from the RMTAO

What should I wear or bring?
I use draping to keep you safe and secure. I always work within your comfort level. Treatment can normally be done with clothing on, over the draping or directly on the skin. Draping will always be used to keep areas that aren't being worked on draped.

Why do I need to put a credit card on file?
A credit card on file is required as it can allow easier billing and to sure that in the event that you breach the cancellation policy (see cancellation policy section under Fees), the fees can be charged.
